Karen is a seasoned attorney with more than 20 years of hands-on legal experience across the biotechnology/pharmaceutical industries, both as an in-house lawyer and serving as outside counsel. Most recently, she served as PACT Pharma’s VP Legal. Before this, Karen spent seven years at Talis Biomedical, where she joined as the eleventh employee and held various roles of increasing responsibility, including SVP Legal and Chief of Staff. Karen owned the legal function and provided strategic legal, business, and technical advice to senior management and the Board of Directors as Talis became a publicly-traded company and rapidly scaled.
Prior to becoming an in-house attorney, Karen founded a boutique patent law firm and practiced law at several larger, prominent firms (including Foley & Lardner LLP, Fish & Richardson P.C., and Cooley LLP). Karen’s practice was focused on counseling clients in intellectual property and related business matters, including designing and executing strategic intellectual property plans, drafting and negotiating commercial agreements, and prosecuting and enforcing patent rights.
Karen holds both a J.D. and a Ph.D. in Molecular and Cell Biology from U.C. Berkeley and she earned an A.B. in Biochemical Sciences from Harvard.
